Gloomy outlook for fall economy

The economic outlook for the fall is not promising, according to both local and national indicators of future activity.

The University of North Florida’s Local Economic Indicators Project (LEIP) said Thursday its Leading Economic Indicators for the Jacksonville area fell sharply in June, and revised data shows the index has fallen in three of the last four months.

On a national level, the Conference Board said its U.S. Leading Economic Index fell in June for the second time in the last three months.

The indexes are designed to project the economy several months in advance.

“Both the national and local LEIs have turned downward in the last few months. This suggests that the recovery is stalling and the outlook is not strong for the fall,” UNF economist Paul Mason said.

The index for the Jacksonville area fell by 1.06 points in June to 102.90, LEIP said. LEIP also reported last week that its Consumer Price Index for the Jacksonville area fell at a 0.18 percent annual rate through the first six months of this year. Mason said the decline in consumer prices is another sign of weakness in the economy.

The U.S. leading indicators fell by 0.2 percent in June. The Conference Board also said its index of coincident indicators, which measures current economic activity, was unchanged in June
